SMITH is pleased to present Jeanne Gaigher’s second solo show ‘Wieg’. In this collection of paintings and painted-upon photographs, Gaigher uses the notion of ‘wieg’, or ‘vacillate’, as her method to negotiate a personal archive of photographs and audio recordings collected from her day-to-day experiences. Moving between this archive of recordings and the recollection of the lived experiences themselves, Gaigher extracts new translations of this information through the process of painting.

As the artist explains,“The word ‘wieg’ accurately describes the way in which I’ve moved around and worked; highlighting an uncertainty towards the photos I’ve taken, reiterating them into paintings, intermittently guided by scenarios I’ve found myself in, knowing I have a show coming up. It’s an unpredictable process; leading up to the cut off time when everything will be almost forcefully pulled together, being dependent on chance and of course my choice to react, include or ignore.”

Re-navigating these recordings of her personal experiences, Gaigher produces multiple scenes for the viewer to move through, and experience a personal sense of the disjointedness of the familiar.

Jeanne Gaigher was born in 1990 in Cape Town, South Africa where she currently lives and works. She completed her Fine Arts degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 2012. Her debut solo show ‘Club’ was held at SMITH in 2015 while concurrently exhibiting a solo booth at FNB Joburg Art Fair 2015. SMITH recently exhibited her paintings at the 2016 edition of the FNB Joburg Art Fair as well as the Cape Town Art Fair. She has taken part in the following group shows hosted by SMITH – ‘Current’, ‘Sketch’ and ‘Best in Store’. She exhibited work at THAT ART FAIR 2016 in a group show titled ‘Travel’ in collaboration with Between10&5 and also exhibited works in ‘How Blushing Foot And Scissors Met On The Fourth Floor Of Atlantis’ at Kalashnikovv, Johannesburg. Her work has been included in a number of private collections and forms part of the Yellowwoods Collection.

‘Wieg’ will be on exhibition from the 13th of October until the 19th of November 2016.
